It’s been a slow week at work because many folks have been out on vacation. I took some time to photograph some very cool looking tests going on in our HPLC Prep lab. Don’t ask me what all that means – I just photograph the stuff. The chemist in charge told me it has something to do with explosives analysis so I thought that sounded cool as well 🙂 I do like my job – wouldn’t trade it for anything (most days).
Southern Summertime spelled “Sunflowers”
The Many Moods of Huspah Creek
This is one of the prettiest creeks in South Carolina and it looks different every time I visit. I can seldom pass it by, and this time was no exception. There were storms in the area, rainbows came and went, and the sky was full of drama. Look out for it next time you drive down Highway 17 on your way to the I-95.
Old Sheldon Church ruins at night
For a new twist on an old subject, we decided to do some night photography at Old Sheldon Church south of Charleston via Highway 17S near Beaufort. The pre-existing building was originally known as Prince William’s Parish Church and was built between 1745 and 1753. It was first burned by the British in 1779 during the Revolutionary War and rebuilt in 1826. It was burned a second time in February 1865 by General Sherman’s troops marching from Georgia into South Carolina. It was never rebuilt.
Honey, I think the grass needs cutting …
Dinner last night
We had set the crab trap over the weekend and the kids had lots of fun pulling it up to check how many crabs we had managed to lure with our chicken necks. I have a catch and release policy for our house because I can’t deal with the thought of cooking them alive. My neighbors have no such qualms however, and so they emptied the trap last night, threw the crabs on the boil, and when the meal was ready they invited me over for dinner. Funny, I didn’t have a problem with that.
Family Calisthenics
My son-in-law and grandson have their own crazy routines. When Gideon was just a little thing, Josh would throw him high in the air. Fortunately he always caught him on the way down. As he has grown and got a little heavier, they have found other forms of boisterous amusement, like jumping off the high dock platform into the river. This is one of their latest acts, but again it won’t play out for long since Gideon is growing like a weed and even Josh won’t be able to clear his height for too much longer.
Reenactors from the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry in the Charleston City Jail
Following
on from my previous post covering Joe, James, and Ernest’s
story-telling gig outside the Charleston City Jail last week, here are
some images taken inside the jail. We had to take these a couple of
days later because we had to work around the schedules of regular nightly tours given by Bulldog Tours of Charleston. Thanks to Sean for arriving early to let us into the building. What an awesome old building, and if those walls could just talk …. If you would like to book this group for story-telling and re-enactment, please contact Joseph McGill at 843-408-7727 or email him at [email protected]
Stories from soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry
Storytellers and re-enactors James Brown, Ernest Parks, and Joe McGill are passionate about keeping alive the tales and legends surrounding the exploits of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Their ancestors fought and many died in the now infamous Battle of Fort Wagner, as well as other skirmishes, and details of these events from historic and humanitarian perspectives were documented and passed from generation to generation. Last night they performed for groups of visiting college students and others outside the Charleston City Jail on Magazine Street downtown. Here are a few of the images I took. You can book this group. Call Joseph McGill at 843.408.7727 or email: [email protected]
The Dunderchiefs Photoshoot
So these guys are awesome and are making quite a name for themselves around Charleston, currently playing regular gigs at Kickin Chicken, The Brick House, Southside 17, Loggerheads, to name a few. Search for their page on Facebook for info about upcoming gigs. They needed a few new photos so we got that done courtesy of John of The Royal American – a really cool restaurant, bar and live music venue on Morrison Drive.
